Responding to CBRN risks
The inadequate control over chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) materials, agents or technologies can pose serious risks, not only to security and public health, but also to economies and the environment. In a globalised world, these risks can quickly cross borders and escalate.
CBRN threats are becoming more complex due to geopolitical tensions, new technologies, and the fact that many materials have both civilian and military uses. Their widespread availability makes strong prevention, detection and response systems even more urgent.
EU CBRN Risk Mitigation flagship initiatives
Ensuring the safe management of CBRN materials means making the world a more secure place. As part of its efforts to promote peace, the European Union is strongly committed to support its partner countries worldwide for the mitigation of and preparedness against CBRN risks through several flagship initiatives:
As a member of the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) and the Science and Technology Centre in Ukraine (STCU), the EU also works with its partners to promote a culture of safety and responsible science and engineering.
